The Life of the Snail (2000)
Altered book assemblage
by
Frank Turek
The inside front cover is covered with an ornately patterned green and tan fabric. Centered on the inside cover is a collaged tile of a black-and-white etching illustration modeling the sun and earth. The frame is covered with a medieval painting of a castle under siege with soldiers on its walls. The interior of the framed area is a black-and-white photograph of an extravagantly adorned, late 19th-century interior. In the top center is a pen sketch of an Egyptian canal boat on the Nile. In the center of the framed area are two wooden beads set apart in a way that echoes the illustration of the sun and the earth. On the bottom right are a large plastic fly and two square black tiles with dictionary illustrations of a soldier’s headgear and foot armor. There are partitions on the top and bottom in the side panels which are covered with text from a story about a snail. The signature and date are on the top left of the frame.
