Entombment (2008)
Altered book assemblage
by
Frank Turek
The background of the inside cover is a wallpaper sample featuring a red, pink and green paisley shape on a coral colored backdrop. Mounted on the inside cover is a hinged lidded box with a black-and-white photo of an Egyptian mummy’s torso and head. The original caption can be seen on the bottom of the lid: “Exhumed Mummy.” Glued atop this image in a grid of three rows of round transparent game pieces of various colors. This box opens up to reveal that it contains its own book assemblage, of sorts. The inside cover of this compartment is lined with text from a children’s biology book about cells. Atop this is a black-and-white drawing of a wide open human mouth from a medical textbook. Just below this image is a small antique cabinet key. The framed section of this compartment is covered with a pink floral patterned fabric. The upper part is simply a mirror, and a lower small framed section contains a clipping from a book on music notating the diminished seventh chord. This is mounted on a piece of black felt. The main frame of this book assemblage is covered with a three-columned text article with the truncated title at the top “..ng Night Patrol With Radio Polic.” The background of the entire frame is a color photograph of a gathering of military vehicles and parade-dressed military men along with civilians milling about. Three civilian women are posing on top of the military vehicle in the foreground. Attached to the center of this photo is a rectangle of black felt and on that is a list of five words from an English usage primer — consent, accede, concur, agree, acquiesce. The inside sides of the frame are lined with rows of translucent green, square faceted gem-like tiles. The top and bottom are lined with black felt. Mounted on the felt are three skull beads. This book assemblage piece is titled, signed and dated on the bottom center of the frame.
