The background of the inside cover is a color photograph of a European countryside. A row of women and children gleaners on a farm are in the foreground of the picture and appear at the bottom of the book cover. In the center-top of this section is a reproduction of Dürer’s Melancholia. Pasted to the bottom of this illustration is an elevated tile of a color illustration of a tree stump with a double-sided axe stuck into it. Tucked beneath this tile is a set of four small cards with an illustration of a mechanical ear collaged onto them. The frame is covered with text from a popular magazine. The background of the top section of the framed area is a color illustration of deep sea life, and at the bottom is an etching illustration of a pack of African dogs. In the top center is the upper half of a purple plastic toy cowboy figure. His torso is placed atop a die with words on its side. A small spring rests on the right hand of the cowboy figure’s outstretched arm. This spring is pulled downward with a brown braided string which is threaded through a black toy arm and then to the right the string is tied to the base of a turquoise earring, which is held by the companion black arm. On either side panel are etching illustrations of men in white powdered wigs sitting about in a 17th-century drawing room. There is text on the top and bottom panels of the framed area. The title, signature, and date are on the top of the frame.
