Altered book assemblage
by
Frank Turek
The inside book cover is covered with a beige, mottled cloth. Glued to the center top of the cover is a small box with a black-and-white photograph of an alpine landscape pasted on top. Within this box is a set of standard-sized playing cards. The Late-Romantic painting, “The Cornfield,” by John Constable, is pasted to the face of the cards. The inside bottom of the box is a color illustration of garden vegetables. The inside lid of this box is a portrait painting of Napoleon. Below this box is a playing card from a game with instructions related to that game. Above the box is a color photograph of a small flock of flying flamingos. The frame is covered with text from the encyclopedia set from which this book originally came. The top part of the framed area is an arch created by a partition of collaged sections covered with black-and-white photos of classical architecture. These images continue down both sides of the inside frame. Just below this arch is a square framed area with an etching depicting a New Testament story. To either side, mounted on blue sticks, are number lists from an arithmetic primer. The bottom third of the book assemblage is covered by a two-windowed matte which is covered with a color photo of a factory at night. The background is a color photograph of a South American horse and rider in a mountainous landscape with a waterfall. On the bottom, setting on top of a black-and-white photo of motors and gears, is a small ceramic tiger.
