Inexorable as doom (2000)
Altered book assemblage
by
Frank Turek
On the inside cover is a black-and-white photo of a dramatically lit couple. The man on the bottom with a worried look on his face and above him a woman in the nurse’s uniform looking off to the left. There’s also what appears to be shattered glass arranged in the background. The frame is covered with text from a novel. Inside the frame the top main section background is a photo of a large 19th-century arcade with painted panels on the walls and a glass ceiling. Atop this photograph is a tile with an etching illustration of a bone. Tied to this tile with a red ribbon is a rusted small metal bracket. A clipping from a comic book panel is pasted onto the upper right of the background. A mirror is mounted atop part of the main section, and the side panels are covered with fabric patterned with green, amorphous stripes. Below this top section is a boxed-in section covered with a color photograph of a chocolate cake with green icing. Inside this box is a color illustration of a spiny seashell and to either side are a list of numbers. A mirror is on the bottom of this compartment. The signature, title, and date are on the bottom outside of the frame.
