Divining the True and the False (2007)
Altered book assemblage
by
Frank Turek
On the inside cover are two color reproductions of bees. One of the bees is on a green leaf, the other on a yellow flower. In between the two bee photos is a snippet of text, “Only one thing can be traced, that the lessons of life enriched his mind and are part of his work. It”. These three items are on a background of a dark floral pattern wallpaper sample. The frame is covered with text with references to the American west and the conquest of Native Americans. Within the frame, in the main section, is an etching of Paganini in a prison cell playing his violin. Toy plastic colored spiders and a beetle swarm about his legs. Colored wires come up out of the spiders and into the compartment above. In the background of this compartment is a chart of alchemist’s symbols. Glued onto this is a small assemblage of a rusted nail wrapped, inductor-like, with the colored wires. This wire wrapped nail is perched atop two game pieces; discs with the numbers 36 and 39 forming a numerical palindrome. This top section is framed with an illustration of seabirds, vigorously active in the ocean. A mirror covers the bottom of this section as well in the bottom of the main section. The main section’s side panels are illustrations of hand tools displaying their variety of bits. The title, signature, and date are on the outside left bottom of the frame.
