Table of the Mystic Numbers (2022)
Altered book assemblage
by
Frank Turek
The inside cover features a wallpaper pattern of a grid of blue-gray dots over a speckled light-blue background. Over the wallpaper, covering nearly all of it is a black-and-white photo depicting a scene from Shakespeare’s As You Like It featuring Touchstone the fool. Atop this photo is the caption, and title of the book assemblage, “Table of the Mystic Numbers.” The frame is covered with a color illustration of an imagined primeval jungle. This book assemblage features two compartments. The bottom section is covered with rose-tinted glass and the top section is covered with a removable panel featuring a black-and-white photo of three mountain climbers scaling a snow-covered formation. In the bottom compartment is a rubber elephant with a square plastic map pin showing the letter R. Similar pins, showing the numbers 3 and 7 and the letters A and T, are stuck into other areas of this compartment. The backing illustration is a simple drawing of the profile of a person reaching for an apple and depicting the motor reception interactions of the brain, vision, and arm muscles. In the lower right of this section is a title collaged with a snippet from an English language primer.
Beneath the cover of the top section is a compartment sided with red panels each collaged with four fortune-telling premonitions. The bottom of this compartment is a medieval painting of armies from two abutting ships in a naval battle. This compartment contains a plastic flip box covered with a color illustration of a figure pointing to an unusual artifact from a tornado. Inside this flip box is a cylinder collaged with a black-and-white illustration of a “Lung Demonstration Model.” The bottom outside of the frame features a section of the same painting of the medieval ship battle as was used in the bottom of the upper compartment.
