Principal Events: What Will a Magnet Pull? (2022)
Altered book assemblage
The inside front cover is backed with a floral patterned wallpaper on a maroon background. Collaged on this is a line illustration of an open-palmed hand with the caption, “Plate XXVI, Time, and Dates of Principal Events.” Mounted on this illustration are four upright, green wooden game pieces. They are paired together, at the top and bottom of the illustration, with a bundle of bare copper wires threaded through holes in the pieces. In the center of the palm is a disc collaged with a section of the painting /Deer in the Forest/ by Franz Marc, The frame is covered with a black-and-white photo of the courtyard of an English castle under a gray sky. The background of the framed section is a black-and-white photo of the shore of a mangrove and its reflection in the water. An added caption at the bottom reads, “What will a magnet pull?” This photo is bisected at the waterline by a clear glass shelf edged with green paint. Two long rectangular tiles are float-mounted above and below the shelf. The top tile is collaged with a yellow-tinted illustration of a moon crater, and the bottom tile shows a ship on the horizon against an orange sky. The glass shelf, mounted with two gray cubes, supports a transparent orange plastic fish and two NYC subway tokens. The top and bottom inside panels of the frame are collaged with sections of Henri Rousseau’s painting, A Lion Devouring Its Prey. The inside side panels of the frame are mirrors.
