Evaporation in the United States (2009)
Altered book assemblage
The background inside cover is covered with a green-tinted fabric. On the left edge of the inside cover is a painting of a woman and an assortment of cookware. Above her is a list of words and phrases related to money. Lined up from top to bottom on the inside cover are three pen-and-ink illustrations depicting the uses of fire throughout history. Beneath each illustration are captions from an arithmetic primer. The frame is covered with text from pages from the encyclopedia set from which this book originally came. The background of the framed section is a color photograph featuring two men standing on a ledge at the Grand Canyon. Mounted on a pink plastic stick is a black-and-white photograph of a dapper yet suspicious looking man. Pinned to his lapel is a clasp of a silver necklace which loops downward with the other half of the necklace extending up to the top left where it is pinned to the black-and-white photo of a suit of armor. On the left opposite side is also another suit of armor. A small white chess piece king is atop the lower compartment. The top panel is an etching illustration of a dog about to attack a porcupine.
The bottom section is covered with a colored postcard of a landscaped Florida park with a square-inch window cut in the middle revealing part of an etching illustration. This postcard is a flap which opens downward revealing the interior of this bottom section. In the center we see the full illustration of what was partially revealed through this small square. It is an illustration of two 18th-century men pouring drinks alongside a smith pounding a piece of metal. This illustration is on a tile which itself can be removed, revealing another interior. This interior box contains a set of collaged cards wrapped with a toy $500 bill. In the background of this central box is a color illustration of a birch tree trunk and a sample birch leaf. To the left and right of this box are two small vials. Inside the bottom third of each vial are close-up color photographs of insects parts. Atop these illustrations and inside the vials, pinned to a bed of cotton, are disembodied toy plastic heads. In the background of the compartment where the vials are placed are dictionary clippings from the S section. Mirrors are on either side of this lower compartment.
